Hearing Care as Rehabilitation

Like physical therapy for your body or speech therapy after a stroke, hearing rehabilitation involves retraining your brain to hear sounds again after years of hearing loss. Unfortunately, many people have negative experiences with treating hearing loss because our culture advertises that hearing aids will "fix" your hearing back to normal. This is far from the truth. Hearing aids are only one part of the toolkit in treating hearing loss. Successful hearing care requires professional guidance from day one, where your hearing is cared for step by step, from the first conversation with the audiologist through structured follow-up care over time so your brain can adapt to hearing again.

Better Hearing Demonstration

The results of your hearing evaluation will allow Dr. Aussem to perform a better hearing demonstration. This provides a glimpse of how appropriately fit hearing aids (see Real Ear Measurements below) can dramatically change your life. He will also discuss best treatment options which are always centered on building a trusting relationship, structured follow up care, hearing technology solutions and ongoing treatment to ensure successful outcomes.

Best Practice - Real Ear Measurements (REM)

Watch Dr. Cliff Olson's video on why REM are so important to an accurate hearing aid fitting.

What are REMS??

Real ear measurements are objective measurements to ensure that your hearing aids are programmed as accurately as possible to your hearing. During a hearing aid fitting, your hearing test is entered into the computer, and a probe tube is inserted in your ear while your hearing aids are turned on. This small tube picks up sound from the hearing aid and measures how well the hearing aid is functioning for your hearing loss.

Without REM, hearing aids could be over or under-amplified, thereby not treating your hearing appropriately. For this very reason, REM is considered a best practice in audiology. Unfortunately, most hearing care providers do not offer this service.

BENEFITS OF REM

  • Engages you and your family in the fitting process
  • Provides immediate objective results
  • Proven to increase successful outcomes of fittings
  • Increases your confidence and comfort in using your new hearing aids
  • Provides more accurate programming of hearing aids
  • Reduces the number of return visits
